December 11, 2009 Tony Wong
BUSINESS REPORTER

The price of a new home in the Toronto area increased in October compared to a month earlier, according to figures released by Statistics Canada today.

A surging new home market has meant prices have increased 0.3 per cent from September, according to the federal agency.

After a moribund start to the year, new home sales in the Toronto area hit heights not seen in two years, while doubling sales from last October.

Still, new home prices are down 0.1 per cent from last October.

Nationally, Statistic Canada's new home price index rose 0.3 per cent in October over September.

Prices increased the most in Quebec, up 1.1 per cent, followed by Vancouver at 0.7 per cent. Hamilton, Sudbury and Thunder Bay showed 0.5 per cent increases.
