1952

This is a picture of a Coldspot refrigerator my parents bought at Eaton's in Pembroke in the fall of 1952 to keep my formula cold.

I was born that September and the icebox they had kept dripping on to the floor so they decided to splurge. It cost the enormous sum of $150, when my dad's salary as a starting teacher was only $180 per month.

This fridge has continued to work perfectly through moves to Alexandria and then to Peterborough. It was relegated to "downstairs duty" in 1977 and, despite the demotion, still keeps extra pop, ice cream and milk cold. The handle was broken by a too-strong boyfriend along the way and my dad "jerry-rigged" a new one with a piece from an old swing-set ladder.
