The Lonsdale clan has a cottage on Big Island on Paudash Lake and, after 45 years without hydro, the family decided to bite the bullet and go modern.

The summer we did, we cleaned out the shed. We rented a pontoon boat in order to cart away to the local dump the things we thought we would repair and or use again but hadn't. One item at the back of the shed was an old Hotpoint electric stove (three burners and a soup pot, storage for pots and pans and a warming oven), which came from a great aunt who had purchased it in the early '40s. It had been in the shed since the late '60s, waiting for the day when we would get hydro. It was piled high with old life jackets, ski ropes, lawn chairs....

It got too late to take it to the dump, and so we took it home, planning on having it picked up on our regular clean-up day or to place an ad on eBay, hoping someone might like a vintage stove. Neither happened. It sat in our garage for the winter. The next spring, my husband pulled the stove out and decided to clean it up. It looked wonderful, but would it work? On a trip to Port Hope, we found a store that deals with old appliances, stoves and fridges. We showed them pictures and they said they would look the stove over. In a few weeks it was in working order and has now been in use for three years. Although probably not as efficient as the newer models, it serves our purpose for the time being.
