Our freezer is a 10-cu.-ft., chest-type Viking, purchased from Eaton's for $299, and delivered to our home in Hardisty, Alta., in November 1958. We needed it because it was the custom there to have a large vegetable garden and also to buy meat in the form of a side of pork or a quarter of beef.

There is little more to say about it, because it has run trouble-free ever since, and it still is.

Our electric clothes dryer is a Kenmore, purchased in February 1961 for $170.10. The heating element burned out in 1994 and was easily replaced. Even though this model was no longer made, the new models were still using the same element. The motor needed to be replaced once; it required a little more fiddling to make the new one fit.

Although it still works fine, it does not get a lot of use now; my wife hangs the washing outside – or inside – when possible.

Our air conditioner dates from June 1972, a Homart from Simpsons-Sears that cost $999.98. It once required an overhaul, which included a new motor. It now gets used maybe five days in any one year.
