After the long winter months, it’s nice to see the first signs of spring. For many, this includes the wonderful experience of freshening up the home and purchasing new things.
Here are five of my favourite items for 2010, which are also easily accessible and affordable.
Graphic floral print pillows
Look for fresh, floral prints with a graphic element this spring.
A graphic print and neutral colour palette offers a more gender-neutral and contemporary feel than traditional floral patterns. It is also more versatile, and can be paired with bolder colours and patterns in a living room or toned down for a softer look in the bedroom.
Calming neutral grey and cream shades will complement any existing accent colour in your space.
Lanterns
Lanterns can act as a decorative element for both indoors and out.
Choose something that doesn’t appear too seasonal. This will allow you to bring the lantern inside during the winter months and incorporate it into your existing interior decor.
The Abbot silver cut-out lanterns, shown, add a romantic and whimsical element to your patio or porch. They are also wide enough for two to three tea lights. This is ideal for a small space which can only accommodate one or two lanterns.
Glass lamp
Think outside the box. Rather than the usual heavy lampshade and base, choose lamps that are completely made of glass.
The curvilinear shape of the Abbot lamp, shown, in conjunction with the antique silver finish creates a sophisticated and timeless piece that doubles as a vase. This particular lamp is on a dimmer switch which allows you to control the level of ambient lighting in your space.
Silkscreens
Posters are making a huge comeback with graphic images. Take it one step further with these silkscreens made by Smash at their in-house studio.
The silkscreens are made using acrylic ink on a heavy duty acid free paper and the hand awled edges create a frayed effect which sets them apart from a regular printed poster. Bold statements, such as the popular “Keep Calm and Carry On,” along with the Ontario Coat of Arms and Helvetica typeface are a few interesting and inexpensive options to feature artwork in your home.
White retro chairs
The re-invention of a classic mid-century design in white leatherette is comfortable, stylish and brightens an interior. This chair can be used for casual or formal dining, as an occasional chair or as a task chair for a home office. The soft curvilinear seat contrasts the architectural base which adds visual interest to any space and can be successfully paired with any style table.
