Ty Pennington's office imperatives

Consider some of these ideas when designing an at-home workplace that means business.
Do edit. There’s no way to save everything (we all want to!), so get rid of the surplus. Store items you need long-term (like tax records) in sturdy plastic boxes in the garage or attic.
Don’t function in the dark. Boost natural and ambient light with well-placed task lighting.
Do get technical. Be sure there’s adequate power and outlets. ID cards and cables with tick-on labels.
Don’t get lazy. Sort mail daily. If it’s a shared family office, designate a cabinet, shelf or cubby for each member. Use a whiteboard calendar to schedule appointments and post to-do lists on corkboard.
Do keep glare from hitting your computer monitor and causing headaches. Reposition your screen or dress windows with affordable shades.
Don’t overlook opportunities to adapt space. A hall table or a stair landing may have workspace potential.
