Smart kitchens are cooking for 2010, says designer William MacDonald. Technology tops his list of kitchen trends, with appliances able to do more with the touch of a button or swipe of a screen.
Finishes are also getting an update. While stainless steel has become a classic choice, on par with white and black, burnished copper is the newest designer darling. MacDonald notes it's a really versatile finish that looks just as good in a loft as in a country-style home. He's also a fan of panel fronting appliances, which helps everything (except for your oven) blend seamlessly with your cabinetry.
The latest designs are also built to last. While, previously, renovators wanted their kitchen styles to reflect the expense, he says people are tending to invest in classic looks over trends. For example, instead of cabinets in an of-the-moment hue, renovators are choosing traditional woods or neutrals.
He suggests opting for neutrals in hard surfaces, such as countertops, cabinetry, floors and backsplashes, and punching up the palette in items that can be easily changed in the course of a weekend, such as linens and dishes.
