Goodies for your ghouls and ghosts

October 15, 2009

From sweet treats to downright creepy delights, check out our collection of Halloween recipes to entertain - and gross out - family and friends.

The best part about these creepy bloody eyeball cupcakes – aside from being delicious – is the surprise factor.

Don't warn your guests that when they bite into the cupcakes, they will get a bloody (and maybe messy) surprise.

Whether you're hosting a party or just warming up after tricking-and-treating, "spirits" are a fine way to get your ghoul on. The Purple People Eater is a sweet, easy cocktail with plenty of spook appeal while the Warm Harvest Martini goes down smooth and toasty.

These whoopie pies got dressed up for Halloween – with seasonally orange cookies and gross-out green (but still delicious) cream filling. To turn them into pumpkins, use orange food colouring in the filling instead of green and pipe a small dollop of  green frosting on top to create a "stem."

Halloween is for zombies, and this one should definitely scare the adults – or at least help induce the catatonic state favoured by the undead. Serve with Tiki Snack Mix.

Between expensive costumes, gobs of candy for trick-or-treaters and all the requisite spooky decorations, the real fright this Halloween could come when you check your wallet on Nov. 1. But with a little resourcefulness and some shopping smarts you can host a fine Halloween shindig without sending your budget to the graveyard.

Providing a snack for a child's classroom is no simple task, especially when it comes to Halloween. The best bet is something healthy, that avoids the major allergens (such as nuts) and that the kids will still get a kick out of. It sounds like a tall order, but these Jack-O'-Lantern sandwiches and other treats may fit the bill.

And, if it's trick-or-treat night, and you just want to get something nutritious into the little ghouls before they head out to collect enough junk to send them into paroxysms of hyperactivity, try our peanut noodles recipe for good food before the goodies.
